Tim Walberg, A Birther, And One Who Stands For Traditional Values Runs For Michigan House Seat

Who Runs Gov reports on Tim Walberg: A former minister, Walberg is decidedly conservative. Before fixating on congressional campaigns several years ago, Walberg served for 15 years in the Michigan House. While Walberg has run several unsuccessful campaigns for Congress in the 7th district, he previously held the House seat there between 2007 and 2009.

Walberg consistently stresses his aversion to federal interference in most sectors. He calls for lower taxes for individuals and corporations, as well as the elimination of capital gains and inheritance taxes. He has also repeatedly said that the government should have no role in education or gun control. He is anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion rights.Walberg for Congress, Accessed October 1, 2010(1)Walberg for Congress, Accessed October 1, 2010

At the same time, Walberg has been unclear on several key issues. He has both endorsed the privatization of Social Security and Medicare and spoken out against it. While not a Tea Party candidate, he has been unclear about his position as a “birther.” During the 2010 campaign, he stated that he “does not know” if President Obama was born in the United States or if he a Muslim.Jilani, Zaid, “Former GOP Rep. and House Candidate Tim Walberg: ‘I Really Don’t Know’ if Obama Muslim or Born in U.S.” Think Progress, September 24, 2010(2)Jilani, Zaid, “Former GOP Rep. and House Candidate Tim Walberg: ‘I Really Don’t Know’ if Obama Muslim or Born in U.S.” Think Progress, September 24, 2010 On the same day, he was quoted saying, “I take President Obama at his word that he is a Christian and was born here in America.”Hunt, Casie, “Candidate Trips on Birther Issue” Politico, September 24, 2010(3)“Hunt, Casie, “Candidate Trips on Birther Issue” Politico, September 24, 2010
