German Defence Minister Calls For Formation Of European Military Force

Open Europe reports that in an op-ed for FAZ, German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg argues that “the commitment to European defence must be more than just lip service” and says he is willing for the German Bundeswehr to share some of its duties with other armies in Europe.


Deutsche Welle notes that Guttenberg is expected to present, together with his Swedish counterpart StenTolgfors, a project calling for greater European military cooperation at today’s meeting of EU defence ministers.


Also, AFP. reports that Berlin is ready to share its military expertise with other Europeans. The German Minister of Defence, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg says he is ready to see the Bundeswehr give up some of his skills in the context of a strengthened military cooperation in Europe, in an article published Thursday by the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine. It is “a sharing of roles and duties,” he wrote, according to excerpts released from the rostrum by the newspaper.
